Mama Knows best: End of year teacher gifts

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

Everyone I know right now is scrambling to come up with a unique end of year teacher gift so here are few!

Class Flower Pot - Put each students hand print with uv/water safe paint along with their name. Place a potted flower inside. The teacher can use it year after year and remember her class!

Personalized Dish Towels- Get a couple of white sack cloth large dishtowels. (I get mine at the dollar store) Have the kids write one thing they love about their teacher with washable paint.

Personalized book- Companies such as Shutterfly has great on-line books that you can make with your own captions and pics. Compile pics from field trips, class pictures, and even handwritten letters from the kids. (I really love when the kids write what they love about their teacher or a difference they have made in their lives.)

Pedicure Gift Certificate- Who doesn't like their pigs painted? :)

Coffee / Tea Basket - Get a lovely basket and fill it with gourmet coffee, bags of fruit flavored teas, a coffee mug (the ones that I found at the $1 store this week would be perfect. Have your little person decorate the mug.....make sure you include the year!) a fancy stirring spoon, honey sticks, chocolate covered spoons, some fancy chocolates, anything decadent for your sweet teacher!

Movie pack - Get one of these giant buckets I found at the dollar store and fill it with a gift certificate from a movie store, microwave popcorn, movie boxes of candy, some fuzzy slippers and a candle. Perfect movie night in !

Mama knows Best: foo foo coffee at home!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

One of my "things" that I occasionally indulge in is a fancy foo foo coffee drink. I know its a luxury..... but I love it so!

One of my very favorites is the Cafe Mocha. I usually go through the drive through and then enjoy the aroma and sweet flavor of the special drink. It was when I went inside to order, however that I got a little surprise.

Are you ready?
I placed my order and watched as they grabbed a cup and filled it halfway with coffee. Then they filled it halfway with cocoa. They then put s dab of whipped cream and and handed it to me.

I stood kind of mystified. I quickly looked at the price list and then back down at my mocha... huh.

The next day at church I tried my own hand at the mocha. I filled my cup with coffee and then mixed in a packet of cocoa. Let me tell you... it was delish....and cheap!

Now I make my own before I hit the road. I can use light cocoa when I am trying to watch the waistline and it has saved me a fortune... enjoy y'all!

Mama knows Best: laundry mayhem

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!
Ahhhh...laundry. You love it when it smells nice and fresh. You hate it when its piled to the ceiling and you don't know how it got that way. Love it or hate it, you have to do it. I am always looking for ways to make the laundry experience more....manageable.

I always fold or hang clothes before I even make the trek upstairs. That doesn't really help the put away process, however. I always go back and forth between rooms. I finish in my sons room only to find something at the bottom of the pile of his and have to go back. It goes on like this ....

Recently I have developed a great process to help me and save me time. I bought 4 laundry baskets, of four different colors. Each person is assigned a color. If you have laundry it goes in your basket. I then take the basket downstairs, wash the laundry, fold, hang and place back in the same basket.

One trip to one room. It saves me some eye twitching in my left eye :)

Mama Knows Best: Serving veggies in the summertime

I love to entertain. Especially in the summertime. I think we eat outside more than we do inside :) Since we eat from our garden, there is an abundance of salads and fresh veggies.

This is great...except when the heat strikes. It seems as if I barely get the salad on the table when I notice its already wilting!

So, I have found that if I place my salad plates or bowls in the fridge for an hour before dinner, all my salads, fruits and cold veggies stay nice and crisp for serving...which makes for some good entertaining :)

Mama knows best: Keep sweet tea....sweet!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I love me some sweet tea! I also love ice in my tea...after all its best served cold. I just hate the way it gets watered down.

A friend of mine told me that next time I make sweet tea, fill an ice cube tray (I find them in the $1 bin at Target- in fun shapes to boot.) with the tea. I then use the frozen tea cubes in my ice tea.

It keeps the tea cold and nothing gets watered down!

** I have also used this trick for bridal and baby showers. I freeze some fresh mint or fruit such as raspberries in cubes to add a little sparkle to the tea. (I especially like peaches in cubes because it flavors the tea in a lovely way.)

Mama Knows Best : How to pick a really great watermelon

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!
My little man loves him some watermelon! I never knew what ones were really good ones, however. It was always hit or miss. Since we are starting to hit "watermelon season", I thought I would post what exactly to look for!

* The watermelon rind should be matte and NOT GLOSSY!

* The bottom should be cream, NOT WHITE!

*Growing your own? Look for the same signs above but also look for the green curly vine to start to yellow. (This means that the plant is no longer feeding the melon.)

Mama Knows Best: Helpful tips

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

Wow! I have not done a Mama knows best in...well ....forever! My BFF Monica sent me these helpful hints in an e-mail and I found it quite interesting!! Some tricks I have used and some I still want to try so let me know if any of these have worked (or not) for you!

**Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster..

**Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

**Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

**To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of Spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

**For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

**Reheat Pizza Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

**Easy Deviled Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

**Expanding Frosting When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

**Reheating refrigerated bread To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in A microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food Moist and help it reheat faster.

**Broken Glass Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip t o pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

**No More Mosquitoes- Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

** Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

** Measuring Cups Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such As peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

** Re opening envelopes If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

**Conditioner Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.

**Goodbye Fruit Flies To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup an d gone forever!

**Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Mama knows best - Cleaning the house!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I clean on Saturday mornings. Its a time that I can let the kids play and I can do what I need to do. When I was telling my best friend that the other day she wrinkled up her nose and said "Doesn't it take up your whole day?"

The truth is that I have such a routine it only takes me 2 hours... max. Another confession is that cleaning is one of my control things. I go to cleaning when life seems a little crazy. As a result, I have picked up some tricks and tips that help the cleaning go faster and be more effective.

* Save the all out, sweeping the ceiling, washing down the baseboards type of cleaning for spring and fall. (Or at least quarterly.) If you try to tackle this type of cleaning every week...it will take you all day!

* Do one task at a time. Not one room at a time. For example dust the whole house first or empty all the trashes in the house. That way if something comes up and you can't finish the house you feel like you have actually gotten alot accomplished.

What sounds better? I got the whole house dusted or I got the dining room cleaned. See??

* Do the things you hate the most, first. I hate bathrooms so I do those first. After those, the rest seems easy and I breeze thru them.

* Start off with a picked up house. I always, no matter how tired I am, pick up the house last thing on Friday night. If I have to pick up the house, putting things away, it will take me forever to clean!!

* Keep things freshened up throughout the week. I sure won't clean but I may run the sweeper or wipe out a sink here or there. It makes things look nice and it cuts down the cleaning time on my cleaning Saturdays!!

Mama Knows best- Toilet cleaning

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I have to say cleaning toilets is one of my least favorite things. I hate the whole thing....yuck! One of the things that I hate the most is that I getting the brush to and from the garage. (Where we keep the cleaning supplies.)

I can either..

1.) Try to run as fast as I can while the brush drips some yucky crude on my floor or worse me!

2.) I keep it in some toilet holder which makes me cringe. A nice little yellow crust begins to form on the bottom. I am gagging a little just talking about it.

My darling hubbie has come up with the perfect solution and I think I love him a little more for it!

He takes our Kroger milk jugs and makes them into disposable toilet brush holder.

It has a handle, there is no dripping and when it starts to get yucky, we throw it away.

Have I mentioned that I love my hubby? :)

Mama Knows best- Medicine storage

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I love organization. I really love when I find a organization system that not only works but saves me time and money. A while back, I posted how we kept the kids medicine stored. I am proud that it is still working for us.

Our big people medicine is a different story, however. It isn't until my nose is running like the Nile and I am coughing at 3am, that I realize I need a system!

We now use a 3 drawer organization system to house syrups, cough drops, pills, bandages, band-aids, creams, tape and any other medications that may be needed. (I found mine at Odd Lots but I have also seen them at the dollar store on occasion!)

We use one drawer for medication. One for creams and bandages and one for First Aid.

It keeps things simple and nothing is laying around. It also saves money because I know what I have and don't buy excess, only to find that I have 2 boxes already! There have also been a few emergencies that we don't have to run around like chickens with our head cut off. We simply pull the first aid drawer and everything is there!

Mama Knows Best: Using those Christmas candies

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Some how we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

If you have ever read my blog , you will probably know my hate of waste. I was confronted with this while taking down my decorations this week. I found myself with a whole lot of leftover Christmas candy.

I certainly did not want to throw it out!! (Hello Expensive!) But I also didn't want to display red and green wrapped candies in my kitchen either !!! So, here are a few things to do with those Christmas candies!!

** Melt the solid chocolates and drizzle over store bought (or homemade!) cheesecakes. You can make anything prettier and tastier with chocolate drizzle!!!

** Use your Hershey kisses in cookies. Here is a good recipe! I also found a yummy Hershey kiss Brownie recipe.. chocolate on chocolate... now that is what mama is talkin about!

**Use your nougat candy bars. Take 4-6 apples and chop them. Chop the candy bars you have left. Combine chopped apples and candy bars and top with whipped topping. You will be surprised how good it is. (And its practically a fruit, right? )

** Last but not least those M&M's !! This mama separates the candies by color. I put the red in a ziploc bag and the green in one. I use the red For Valentines day M&M cookies and the next month I use the green for St. Patrick's day cookies. (Or you could just give the bag of green ones to your hubby for Valentines day... I'm just sayin....) Here is a great recipe for the cookies.

M&M Cookies

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups candy-coated milk chocolate pieces

In a large bowl, mix sugar, eggs, shortening, and vanilla thoroughly. Add flour, salt, and baking soda to creamed mixture. Blend well. Add 3/4 cup of M&M candies.

Drop dough by teaspoonful onto cookie sheet. Slightly push a few candies on top of each dough ball with remaining candies.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 9 to 11 minutes, to your liking

Mama Knows Best: Waste What?!?!?

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I have a thing with waste. With each thing I throw out, I cringe a little. Don't get me wrong, I am far from a pack rat. When it comes to food, however, I just hate waste.

Often I will have a recipe that calls for chopped onion, celery, green pepper or other veggies. I try to find other recipes that calls for the same ingredients so there is no waste but often I just have leftover celery or green pepper staring sadly at me through the glass. :(

So now when I have leftover celery or other veggies that I know I am not going to use, I know what to do!

I chop them into pieces, place in a freezer bag and freeze the little suckers. Then when I make noodle soup or other recipes that calls for chopped veggies, I can simply take the baggie out and add it to the recipe. There is no waste and it save you chopping time!

It also make great pizza toppings!

My hubby is a fireman and paramedic. He looks great in his uniform. :) He also encounters alot of sickness. (Hey, you take the good with the bad!) So, since we are at high exposure risk to the creepy crawlie bugs, I sanitize. The thought of my little ones getting the flu makes me get the heeby geebies.

Someone asked me the other day what I sanitize so I thought I would share my list of common things that we often forget. (That carry alot of germs.) It will take a couple minutes but could save you alot of heartache. Happy cleaning y'all!!

Mama Knows Best - What to do with those apples!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

My sons pre-school teacher just gave me this tip and it was too good not to share!

A couple of us room moms were talking about how we went apple picking, or were given an abundance of apples! I recounted my 4 hour struggle to core, peel and slice 20 lbs of apples. Then I soaked them in Fruit Fresh water and then bagged and froze them. WHEW!

My sons teacher said that her mama would fill a disposable pie pan with the apple slices and cover them with foil and freeze them right in the pie pans.

When she was making a pie, she would make her pie crust and place the bottom crust in a glass pie pan. Then she would remove the pie pan from the freezer and just pop the already pie shaped apples right into the crusted pie pan. (She had already mixed the cinnamon / spices into the apple mixture.) She would then cover the top with pie crust or pie dough cut into shapes of leaves. Wahlah- a pie ready to go!

Tip: If you are having trouble getting the apples out, then just soak the bottom in some shallow warm water in the sink!

Mama knows best! - Turning stains into beauty!!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I love having parties and get together's. For some reason our house seems to be the stopping point for people and I feel blessed to have them in my home! One of my favorite things to do is to feed people. I tend to cook for an army anyway so if you happen to be in the neighborhood, come on in!!

Since we frequently use tablecloths, we are constantly dealing with stains. I tend to use white / cream until they are so stain riddled that I cannot possibly place dishes to hide them. Then someone passed this idea that was brilliant!!

Take your light colored tablecloth and soak it in a bucket of strong black coffee. It dyes the material a lovely brown color and covers any coffee stains on the linen !!! Its like getting a brand new table cloth and perfect for fall. :)

To spice it up even further, send your kiddos outside to collect some colorful leaves. Place the leaves along the center of the table for some fall color. Or fill a glass cylinder with the leaves and place in the center of the table. (If you have time you can even spraypaint them a lovely copper or gold.) Beautiful and cheap!!!

Mama knows best : trash can tip!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

This weeks tip comes from Traci who has an awesome deals blog :) You can check it out here!

Here are a tip that I use to help keep my sanity:

To save time when taking out the trash, I keep about 4 – 5 trash bags in the bottom of each trash can. Then, when I pull out the full bag, another one is right there and I pull it out and put it back into the can. This way, I am only running around the house looking for trash bags once a month.

Mama knows best: cleaning mirrors with newspapers!

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I am a bit of a clean freak. For some reason, I was born with the need to clean. I know its weird. I recognize.

Anywho, one of the things I cannot stand is streaky mirrors. I have tried various paper towels, cleaning cloths, even old socks! In the end the most effective way I have found to clean mirrors and windows is.... newspaper.

I know it sounds so weird but its true. I take the paper ( after the hubs has read it of course :) ) and fold it and crumple it a little so that I can handle it. Then I spray the cleaner directly on the mirror and start to wipe with the newspaper.

You may notice with the first swipe a streak or two but continue to wipe the surface for a totally smear and streak free surface, You will be amazed!

Happy Cleaning !!!

Mama Knows Best: Dryer Sheets

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I love dryer sheets. Well actually I love the way my clothes smell when they leave the dryer. Except by the time I get a shirt out of closet to wear the smell is faded. :(

My friend shared this tip several years ago. She told me to put a dryer sheet in all my clothes drawers and even shoes that needed a freshening. I keep a dryer sheet in my sock, t-shirt, jammie drawer, you name it! It keeps all my clothes smelling like they just came out of the dryer.

** Don't forget to not use dryer sheets on towels. It makes them less absorbent!

Mama Knows best : No More Wire hangers :)

We as mamas have to be innovative and thrifty all in the same beat. Somehow we find new ways of doing things that save us money, time and maybe if we are really blessed.... sanity!

I don't know about you but I have alot of wire hangers laying around! We don't use them and I don't want to throw them away so they keep getting pushed to the back of the closet. This makes the closet look disorderly which drives me crazy !!! Every time we get dry cleaning back, there are more to add to the pile!

Then I got the best tip. Put the wire hangers in your dry cleaning pile to return to the cleaners! Yep, take them back. The dry cleaners can re-use them. (Or send them to the proper place to re-use them) You don't have the guilt that they are sitting in a land fill somewhere and they are not getting on your nerves in your closet!
