Kroger bargain recipe of the week: Fall Apart Boston Butt

Bargain Meal of the Week

We just made a Pork butt yesterday. Oh my, was it delicious!! I have never made one before but with prices at $.99 /lb I couldn't pass it up!! (I even bought 2 and froze one for later.) You can make this in a crock pot as well. Simply prepare roast as indicated below and then put into a crock pot. Pour apple juice in the bottom of the crock pot and add 1/2 tsp of salt to the juice. Set on high for 30 minutes and then low for 8 hours.

I will not expense spices/oils since most of us have them on hand.

Fall Apart Boston Butt

1 (4 pound) Boston butt pork roast (On sale $.99/lb) $4

1/4 to 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1 cup apple juice (Juicy Juice on sale $1.49) $.19

Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease the inside of a casserole or deep roasting dish.

Put the Worcestershire sauce into a separate bowl and soak the Boston butt pork roast in the Worcestershire sauce. Remove roast from Worcestershire sauce and coat with brown sugar, being sure to press the brown sugar all over to form a crust. Place sugar-crusted roast in the casserole dish. Pour apple juice into the casserole, but do not pour over the sugar-crusted roast. Cover casserole or pan tightly, either with a casserole top or aluminum foil. Place the roast in the oven and immediately turn the heat down to 200 degrees F. Bake for about 5 hours.

Uncover the roast and check for doneness. The meat should be so tender it falls apart easily. If it doesn't, re-cover the roast and cook for 30 minutes more or as needed.

Total Cost of Meal: $4.19

Add mashed potatoes (8 lb bag on sale $2.99) Total Cost of Meal: $4.96

Add mashed potatoes and Salad (Fresh selections on sale $1.89) Total Cost of Meal:$5.90

Just to let you know, I bought one of these and oh my goodness! After several hours in the crock pot (I really had to cram it in there!) the meat just fell off the bone!

I made barbeque for sandwiches with 1/3 of the meat and then just cut up the rest of the meat and separated it into 2 freezer bags. I'll use them at a later date.

Yum, yum. Thanks for the head's up!
